Photoluminescent and Emergency Signage

Photoluminescent signage and markers provide a reliable and economical emergency pathway illumination and brighter,
longer-lasting exit products for emergency exiting.

Used for years in passenger aircraft, marine and other transportation applications, photoluminescent technology has moved into the commercial arena in the past few years.

When the electricity goes out and a building is evacuated, photoluminescent technology plays a vital role in leading employees to safety. Powered only by ambient light, these safety signs and path markers glow in the dark providing a definition of the space which allows people to navigate safely through the building.

As the signs do not need rely on electrically powered systems or batteries, they are more reliable than electrically wired alternatives. The glow-in-the-dark technology is charged by ambient light, which through a chemical reaction creates the glow. Once charged the product is 100 per cent reliable and will not fail in the event of an emergency or fire.

The use of non-photoluminescent signage in a premises without natural lighting is unacceptable under any circumstance.

Symbols used on safety signs may be slightly different from those shown provided the meaning is clear. These may be supplemented by directional arrows which are used with the pictogram to form the sign. A directional arrow is not acceptable on its own.

Signs for emergency escape routes and firefighting equipment are contained in the BS 5499 Regulations Schedule 1, Part II, paragraphs 3.4 and 3.5.
